Peter Tessier: How to Fix the All-Star Vote Let's take a break from Jets angst and talk about something different- the all-star voting.

Just project who the top 5 players will be from each team and put them out so that people can only vote for those players. If someone has a break out season then add them to the ballot. Done.

Better point is fix the whole All Star Game itself entirely! This joke of a weekend event has gone on long enough! Forget gimmicks and the rest. Do something with it or scrap it!

But the point here is engagement- just control the parameters. Fans can vote but don't allow any candidate. Imagine if a federal election were like that?

The key point here is that if there is going to be a fan vote (I don't care, I won't vote) then the vote should be choosing from All Star caliber players. Decide prior to the voting exactly who falls into that by some metric and go from there. You could even just put up the top 5 players from each team and let fans vote from that grouping.

In the end, I don't care, but I wish they would do something to make me care about this game.

Just stop calling it an All Star game, and make in the mid-season showcase. The NHL has players of all types, each very skilled and typically with a personality that the league has had trouble marketing over the years. Who cares if John Scott goes, he will probably have the most fun of all the players, show a few doubters of his actual hockey skills, and be endearing to fans. NHLers give the worst interviews and mixing in a few of 4th liners will add some character.

No one will look at John Scott's career and call him an all-star so just stop calling the game that. Derek Jeter went to the MLB allstar game like 20+ times but when voting for the HOF they will completely ignore that fact as it was just a popularity contest

Here is how you fix it, GET RID OF IT!!!! Fans should not determine who makes an allstar game. Stats should decide. If fans want to vote players in change the name of the game because then it is just a popularity contest.

Peter honestly with all the bots and campaigns etc online voting is all but useless. Lets face it, you can't really fix it and leaving it to the fans? Yeah we know very well how that has gone.

I'd almost say just fix the whole thing and as mentioned earlier go by the stats and best player from each team goes, then the coaches can select to fill out the rest of it. Boom done. Return it back the way it worked and was fine before all this interactive "fan" stuff was brought in. It hasn't made it better at all in the end.

Why not have a 2-stage process:

1. Players, Coaches, hockey writers, broadcasters, etc vote first and the top X players go on a ballot. Presumably they will be focused on the best players...

2. Let the fans pick from the list of X...say X contains 3-4 times more names than those who would eventually be the all-star team.

DONE.

The easiest way to fix is to nominate 4/5 players from each team for the all stars which is then voted on by fans. Then the top votes are captains and the rest are selected as they were previously.

BECAUSE ITS THE VOTING PROCESS THAT IS THE PROBLEM, RIGHT?

Let's ask a different question...

Does John Scott or a player like him deserve a place in all-star game as recognition of all the other players, the vast manjority of NHLers, who all-stars need to play against?

This is a direct hit at Bettman, he has ruined OUR league as fans and we finally got to take a shot at him. Now get the PPV going for Scott vs Bettman. UFC style, i would pay $100 for that over Mayweather.

all the players who never get a chance to be at the all-star game. Maybe it's time they get a regular chance too.

"Deserve" depends on the requirements of the event. Is he among the leagues top players? No, so if thats the standard of the event, then no he doesnt. If its an entertainment event, then sure you could make a case that he is entertaining

He is hilarious! He won't give some blah blah blah presser. He cracks jokes and photo bombs during interviews he is perfect for the ASG and might make it watchable. Can't wait to watch him in the fastest skater contest.

I am in agreement, I think they should mix in a few of the entertainers. All guys that make it to the NHL can play, I think it would be beneficial for the league to be like hey John Scott might not be the fastest skater or most accurate shooter, but he isn't that far off from some of these guys. Just to show the range of talent the league has to offer
